In memory of Dalton R. Folwell
March 16, 1992 - May 17, 1999
In March 1999, Mr. Bob Snyder's class received $1,000 to plant a multicultural garden. After ordering and receiving plants for each of the 6 continents (Antarctica is too cold to support plant life), the class broke ground in the spring of 1999.
Dalton Folwell loved to spend time cultivating the soil, pulling weeds, planting, and watering. Sadly, on May 17, 1999 Dalton was hit and killed by a car as he attempted to board his school bus. Following his death, the class decided to name the gardens in his memory.
Garden Relocation
When the new school building was completed in the Fall of 2004, the gardens were relocated to their new home. Though this required a great deal of work, the gardens had outgrown their previous home so the move allowed for better spacing and placement of the plants. We hope the Dalton R. Folwell Garden will enhance Whitaker for years to come.
Thank you to Susan Peatross for the heart, soul and "woman-hours" that she put into the garden relocation. Thanks also to Bob Snyder and the parent volunteers who showed up early on November 13, 2004 with shovels and shears to relocate the garden to its place near the new building. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Dale, Synthia, Anna, and Stephen Folwell for their assistance with the move.
The garden is a special place for many members of the Whitaker family, therefore we request your assistance in protecting it from harm. Please remind your children to treat the plants with tender loving care so we may all enjoy them for years to come.
