Whitaker Elementary School is located in the neighborhood of Buena Vista in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  The school was built in 1954 and has classes kindergarten through fifth grade.  In the near future look for a memory page with quotes and pictures from former students, pictures from the 50's when Whitaker was new, and a final pictographic tour of the building before demolition!  If you know anyone who could provide pictures from the 50's, 60's, 70's, or 80's please contact the webmaster at the address in the footer of this page!

Welcome to Whitaker Elementary School, School of Excellence. Located in the city of Winton-Salem, North Carolina, in the community of Buena Vista, Whitaker is a small elementary school dedicated to giving excellent education to children. See the many fine features Whitaker offers. 

Mission
Whitaker Elementary School offers a curriculum that is devoted to mastery of the academic fundamentals necessary for the development of each student's full potential. The teachers and staff at Whitaker believe education is a responsibility shared by the child, the home, the school and the community.

Features

• Small class sizes, uninterrupted instructional time, tutoring program and high expectations used to develop strong foundations in reading, writing and math for each child.
• Emphases on problem solving, critical and creative thinking, decision making, group work and oral reports.
• Arts and experiential activities enrich the teaching of science, social studies and other areas of the curriculum. 
• Outdoor classroom, bird observatory, gardens and field trips.
• Focus on service projects and community involvement to teach character, honor and self-discipline. A focus on quality will develop students' sense of pride in their school, work and behavior.
• Technology tools used in classrooms and labs. Students use the Internet and enrichment software and learn keyboarding and word processing.
• Specialists in art, music, physical education, foreign language, media and guidance used to tie the humanities to the academic curriculum.

Lunch
Hot lunch for students at Whitaker is $2.15. Adult lunches are $2.65. Children are allowed to bring their own bag lunch and drink, but soft drinks are discouraged at school for students. Milk is included with their lunch or may be purchased separately for $.45. Parents are welcome to have lunch with their child in the cafeteria on any school day.

PLEASE NOTE: All visitors must report to the office immediately upon arrival to campus. Visitor passes are required.

Take Business I-40, to Knollwood St. exit, turn left from west, right from east on Knollwood to Country Club Road. Turn left onto Country Club. Turn right at light onto Westview, go two blocks and turn right onto Forest Drive, then left on Dartmouth. School faces Dartmouth. Office is at corner of Buena Vista and Dartmouth.
